Thank you for visiting our stand at Middle East Rail. Tapestry are placemaking experts who work with city governments, infrastructure providers and private developers to create vibrant and sustainable cities.

Designing better stations.

Considerate design is the key to making stations work for operators and passengers. Our guest lecture for the Underground Engineering course at ETH Zurich draws on lessons from our book, Underground Urbanism, to explain strategies for designing better stations.

Station site selection.

Finding your way from A - B is deceptively simple when it comes to creating new transport infrastructure. Understanding the local urban context is an important part of the site selection process.

Stations as City Quarters.

The role of the station is more than just a transport node; It is a movement generator that underpins vibrant places and should be seen as an important piece of the urban fabric.

Gateways to local neighbourhoods.

Every journey begins and ends with a walk, and the station is a critical gateway as people arrive in a new neighbourhood. Wayfinding allows people to explore and navigate their way around a new area. Thinking beyond the gateline is critical - consider how a station can sit at the heart of a community.

Property, planning & public realm.

As our experience on Crossrail demonstrates, these themes are key interfaces for the delivery of rail infrastructure.

People friendly places.

How can places be safe and attractive to use at different times of the day and night, for different user groups?

Retrofit for new modes of transport.

As technology advances and urban needs change, look for opportunities to leverage existing structures and the carbon embodied within them, for new uses. The Blackwall Tunnel was opened in 1897 and used by horse and cart to connect north and south London,. Adapted for single direction vehicle use and soon to be superseded by the Silvertown Tunnel, there is an opportunity to retrofit the historic structure as a dedicated walking and cycling connection.
