In December 2017, Islington Council, together with the Mayor of London, Transport for London (TfL) and Hackney Council, issued an ‘Open Call for Design Ideas’ to create an iconic gateway at Old Street.

The purpose of this open call was to seek creative and innovative design ideas from a range of disciplines and partnerships, including design, architecture, art, planning and technology in the redesign of this space. Along with Momentum Transport Consultancy, 18 Degrees Lighting and artists Miriam and Tom (now Tiller Studio), in 2019 our entry was shortlisted and included in a public exhibition alongside work from established international practices.

Our entry, The Stage, envisioned stripping away the existing clutter to the bare essentials of the station entrance and infrastructure, then creating a digital entrance canopy to wrap organically around the space, creating an amphitheatre within it. The Stage would create a terminating view for public realm improvements to the Prominade of Light along Old Street. The versatile, income generating structure would create a civic space for the visual, performing arts and architecture.
